Emergency: Telangana Government Might Ban Kangana Ranaut’s ‘film’ Amid Sikh Community Concerns

Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency has recently come under scrutiny as members of the Sikh community have voiced strong objections to its content. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has reportedly assured community leaders that the state government will consider the possibility of banning the film’s release, pending legal advice.
According to a PTI report, a delegation of 18 members from the Telangana Sikh Society, led by former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, met with government adviser Mohammad Ali Shabbir at the state Secretariat. During this meeting, the delegation presented a formal appeal, expressing serious concerns about how the film portrays the Sikh community.
Shabbir stated that Sikh leaders are particularly troubled by certain depictions in Emergency, which they feel cast the community in a negative light. The delegation argued that the film’s portrayal of Sikhs as antagonistic figures is not only “offensive” but also detrimental to the community’s reputation and social standing. They contended that such representations could reinforce harmful stereotypes and mislead audiences about the true nature of the Sikh community.
In light of these concerns, Shabbir escalated the issue to Chief Minister Reddy, who indicated that the state government would make a decision after seeking legal counsel. A ban on the film in Telangana is being considered as a potential means to address the community’s grievances and avert any backlash.
Earlier this week, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the governing body for historical Gurdwaras, issued a legal notice to the film’s producers, including Kangana Ranaut. The SGPC alleged that Emergency misrepresents Sikh history and contains scenes that are deeply offensive to the Sikh community. Their notice demanded the immediate removal of objectionable content from the film and called for an apology from the filmmakers. Additionally, the SGPC insisted that the film’s trailer, released on August 14, be taken down from all public and social media platforms.
