Emergency’ Still Awaits Censor Certificate: Here Are the Cuts Requested by CBFC in the Kangana Ranaut Starrer

With less than a week until its release, Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency is encountering significant challenges due to alleged objectionable content. The Shiromani Akali Dal has called for the film to be banned, citing concerns over its “misrepresentation of the Sikh community.” On the same day, the Punjab and Haryana High Court heard a petition from Gurinder Singh and Jagmohan Singh, residents of Mohali, who sought the revocation of the censor certificate granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They also requested that the film be reviewed by prominent Sikh figures prior to its theatrical release.
However, the court dismissed the plea after the CBFC informed the judges that the film has not yet been cleared for public viewing. According to Hindustan Times, additional solicitor general Satya Pal Jain, representing the CBFC, stated, “The certification of the movie is currently under consideration. It has not been granted yet and will follow the applicable rules and regulations. Any grievances can be directed to the board.”Meanwhile, Bollywood Hungama has reported on the cut list provided to the filmmakers by the CBFC. The committee requested several modifications, including the addition of two disclaimers with voiceovers. Specific dialogues were altered, such as changing ‘Iss parivaar ki toh…’ to ‘Tum iss parivaar ke…’ and muting the word ‘saala’ due to its context regarding a public leader’s death.
Additionally, ‘Mr. President’ was changed to ‘Rastrapati ji.’The CBFC also requested explanations and factual submissions for various scenes, including the portrayal of violence during the Bangladesh war and controversial remarks attributed to historical figures like US President Richard Nixon and Winston Churchill. The filmmakers provided detailed research and references concerning the film’s content, including its depiction of Bangladesh refugees and archival footage of Operation Blue Star. The duration of Emergency, as submitted to the CBFC, is 146 minutes, or 2 hours and 26 minutes. It is set to hit theaters on September 6.
