Delhi HC Shields Varun Dhawan’s Personality Rights: Orders Takedown of Deepfakes & Fake Ads

The Delhi High Court has granted major legal relief to actor Varun Dhawan by ordering the immediate removal of AI-generated deepfakes, unauthorized merchandise, and fake event bookings that misuse his identity. Justice Jyoti Singh ruled that immediate action was necessary to protect the actor’s reputation and stop the public from being misled. The court issued a broad order blocking websites, e-commerce stores, and social media platforms from using Dhawan’s name, image, voice, or signature for unauthorized commercial gain.

Under the new directives, social media companies must take down any newly reported infringing content within 36 hours of being notified by the actor’s team. Furthermore, tech giants like Google, Meta, and X are required to hand over the basic user information of the accounts responsible for spreading this material. This aggressive stance was largely driven by the discovery of highly inappropriate and explicit AI-generated content. The court strongly condemned these deepfakes, stating that such distasteful material severely damages the actor’s reputation and tricks the public into believing false depictions.

The lawsuit also targeted widespread commercial exploitation of Dhawan’s celebrity status. His legal team presented evidence of online vendors selling unauthorized merchandise and fraudulent booking agencies falsely claiming they could secure the actor for live events. Because Dhawan has legally registered both his name and signature as trademarks, the court recognized these activities as direct legal violations.

This ruling is a significant milestone in India’s legal battle against the misuse of artificial intelligence. As deepfake technology becomes more advanced, Indian courts are increasingly stepping in to set strict boundaries that safeguard personal privacy and digital identity.
