Deepika Padukone Named India’s First Mental Health Ambassador, Vows to Strengthen Support Systems

In a historic step to bolster India’s mental health framework, the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) has appointed actor and philanthropist Deepika Padukone as the country’s first-ever Mental Health Ambassador. The announcement was made in New Delhi on October 10, 2025, coinciding with World Mental Health Day.
As the founder of The Live Love Laugh (LLL) Foundation, Deepika will partner with the Ministry to champion mental health awareness and advocacy across India. This appointment underscores the government’s commitment to integrating mental well-being into national public health priorities.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda highlighted the significance of this collaboration:
“Partnering with Ms. Deepika Padukone will help spread awareness about mental health issues widely, normalize conversations to reduce stigma, and emphasize mental health as a key component of overall public health.”
Grateful and motivated, Deepika Padukone shared,
“I am deeply honoured to be appointed as the Union Ministry’s first Mental Health Ambassador. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has made remarkable progress in prioritizing mental health care. I am eager to work closely with the Ministry to build on this momentum and strengthen our nation’s mental health ecosystem.”
In her new role, Deepika will focus on raising awareness, reducing stigma, encouraging timely help-seeking, and supporting preventive care initiatives. She will also promote access to resources like Tele MANAS (Tele-Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States) and contribute to policy design and strategic interventions that ensure equitable mental health services across India.This announcement also marks a decade of The Live Love Laugh Foundation’s impactful work.
Over the past ten years, LLL’s flagship Rural Community Mental Health Program has supported more than 21,931 individuals with mental illness and their caregivers across 15 districts in eight states.LLL has led several nationwide awareness campaigns such as “Dobara Poocho” and “#NotAshamed”, aimed at normalizing mental health conversations. Its school initiative, “You Are Not Alone”, provides mental health education and emotional support to adolescents, while the Doctors Program trains general practitioners to better address mental health concerns.
Recently, the foundation expanded into the corporate sector with a comprehensive Corporate Mental Health and Well-Being Program.Through this partnership, Deepika Padukone and The Live Love Laugh Foundation seek to bridge the gap between awareness and action, reinforcing the vital message that mental health is as important as physical health.
