YRF and Sun Pictures Issue Rs. 2 Lakh Fine Warning for Underreporting Box Office Collections

Yash Raj Films (YRF) has taken a firm stance to protect the box office integrity of its upcoming major release, War 2. As the highly anticipated Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR film prepares to hit theatres on Thursday, August 14, 2025, YRF has issued a strict warning to exhibitors across India against underreporting ticket sales. Bollywood Hungama reports that any theatre found guilty will face a hefty penalty of Rs. 2,00,000 per screen.
Gaurav Paul, YRF’s distribution head for Delhi and UP, acknowledged the long-standing partnership with cinema owners but also pointed out “stray cases” of collection underreporting in recent times. To tackle this, YRF is deploying independent monitoring teams nationwide to directly track box office collections, ensuring transparency and accuracy.
The studio’s communication made it clear that penalties will be strictly enforced, including not only the monetary fine but also potential legal action and bans on future YRF film supplies for offending theatres. These measures are designed to curb revenue leakages and protect producers and distributors from significant losses, especially for a high-profile release like War 2.
Despite the tough stance, YRF reassured compliant exhibitors that adhering to reporting rules will eliminate any concerns, reflecting a balance between vigilance and trust in their longstanding cinema partners. In a similar move, Sun Pictures issued a warning to theatres screening their film Coolie. Their communication stated that authorized representatives will visit cinemas to verify ticket sales, prices, and Daily Collection Reports (DCR), stressing that all tickets—regardless of whether they were for friends, family, or officials—will be counted.
The penalty for malpractice is also set at Rs. 2 lakhs, with immediate cancellation of the Release Order (RO) and Key Delivery Memo (KDM) for Coolie at the offending venues. Both studios’ proactive measures underscore the ongoing industry challenge of ensuring honest box office reporting and safeguarding revenue in the competitive film market.
