Box Office Phenomenon: The Unprecedented Turnaround of Main Vaapas Aaunga

In a box office plot twist that has stunned trade analysts, Imtiaz Ali’s Partition drama Main Vaapas Aaunga has gone into absolute overdrive. After a quiet, slow-burn theatrical debut, the film’s second-week trajectory has shifted into top gear, triggering unprecedented post-midnight and early-morning show additions across major national multiplex chains.

The film’s performance on its second Friday brought in ₹2 crore, comfortably outperforming its opening Friday collection of ₹1.28 crore—a rare box office phenomenon. By its ninth day (second Saturday), audience demand skyrocketed to such an extent that exhibitors have been forced to alter traditional screening schedules to keep up.

Exhibitors React: 2:00 AM and Dawn Screenings Added

Faced with a massive wave of positive word-of-mouth, cinema chains are rapidly restructuring their programming:

PVR C&B Square in Mumbai scheduled a special 2:00 AM screening for Sunday, June 21, while PVR Nexus in Bengaluru opened a 6:50 AM slot, which immediately went into “fast-filling” status.

Devang Sampat, Managing Director of Cinépolis India (operating 497 screens), confirmed that the chain has hiked the film’s show count by 30% from Friday to Saturday alone to keep up with soaring occupancies.

What the Industry Leaders Are Saying

Gautam Dutta (CEO – Revenue & Operations, PVR INOX Limited):

“The film has grown steadily through the week, which is exactly the kind of trend exhibitors like to see. It reflects genuine, sustained audience interest driven by Imtiaz Ali’s storytelling, Naseeruddin Shah’s powerful performance, and A.R. Rahman’s score, rather than front-loaded promotional hype.

Ritesh Arora (Programming Head, MovieMax):

“While the film had a slow start last week, it witnessed an impressive turnaround during the weekdays. The momentum has exploded into the weekend, with shows going houseful and additional screenings being aggressively added.”

The Power of Slow-Burn Cinema

Produced by Birla Studios and Applause Entertainment alongside Mohit Choudhary and Shibasish Sarkar of Window Seat Films, Main Vaapas Aaunga deals with the heavy emotional and historical realities of the Partition. Though niche period-dramas typically rely on quick weekend turnouts, this project is cementing itself as an iconic modern example of how pure word-of-mouth can completely upend traditional box office economics.
