Among the numerous notable personalities chosen by the filmmakers, Mahatma Gandhi is one who is known as the “Father of the Nation.” His fight to break free from the British authority has served as an inspiration to many.

Today as we celebrate the birth anniversary of our father of the nation let us look at some of the prominent films made on him.

Ace British filmmaker Richard Attenborough has made his dream come true when he made the Oscar-winning film. British actor Ben Kingsley played the role of Mahatma Gandhi, which has left a long-lasting imprint in everyone’s mind. The film represents different facets of Gandhi’s life and times during the freedom struggle till his assassination.

This film, starring Kamal Hasan and Naseeruddin Shah, is about India’s division and Mahatma Gandhi’s killing. While renowned actor Naseeruddin Shah plays Gandhi, Kamal Hasan plays Saket Ram, a Hindu fundamentalist. Even though the film was not a commercial success, it was nominated as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category in 2000. The south Indian actor is the writer, director and producer of the film.

This Bollywood film was a little different from the others based on Mahatma Gandhi. The film, produced by Anil Kapoor, depicts Mahatma Gandhi’s troubled relationship with his son. Darshan Jariwala portrayed Gandhi, while Akshaye Khanna portrayed Harilal Gandhi. Aside from Gandhi’s involvement in the liberation movement, the film portrays certain aspects of his personal life with his family.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher plays Uttam Chaudhary, a retired Hindi professor, in this psychological drama. The professor has dementia and believes he was wrongfully convicted of assassinating Mahatma Gandhi. The mentally sick man receives medical attention from his daughter (Urmila Matondkar) after her relatives retell the childhood narrative that led the sufferer to believe he murdered Gandhi. Anupam Kher produced the film, which was directed by Jahnu Barua.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)

Starring Sanjay Dutt this commercial Bollywood film was a box office success. Despite the fact that the film was not about the struggles for freedom, the sequel to Munna Bhai MBBS originated the word ‘Gandhigiri’ (Gandhian philosophy) in India. The film demonstrates how Gandhian ideas are still applicable in modern life. Sanjay Dutt, who played an underworld don, encounters Gandhi’s ghost and talks with him. To overcome issues, he employs Gandhi’s teachings. Dilip Prabhavalkar, a Marathi actor, played Gandhiji in the film.
