Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui proves to be a classic tale that demonstrates how an unusual story does not require severe treatment. For openers, in this offbeat take on a love tale between a gym trainer and a trans lady, Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor have nailed it.
Maanu (Ayushmann Khurrana) is preparing for a weightlifting competition when he is introduced to Maanvi (Vaani Kapoor), a Zumba instructor. Maanu gradually becomes romantically involved with Maanvi, unknowing of her history, and their relationship blossoms as the plot progresses. But there’s a lot on the line here.
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, directed by Abhishek Kapoor, is a sophisticated and often meticulously structured examination of discrimination against assigned gender identity. Using the tropes of a typical mainstream Hindi film – soft-focus glamour, choreographed songs, a noisy and wacky family, situational humour – the film advocates for those who dare to break free from the boxes they’ve been in since birth. The choice of a bankable non-trans actor to play a trans lady is most likely part of the ruse.
Simran Sahni came up with the tale premise of the battle between orthodoxy and free will. To the extent feasible in a film of this sort, Kapoor and screenwriters Supratik Sen and Tushar Paranjape simplify the complications of transsexual identity. Manu, as expected, is disgusted and refuses to accept Maanvi on her own terms. Maanvi deflects, firm in her choices and at ease in her own flesh.
Ayushmann Khurrana is a nice fit for the bulked-up Manu, but Vaani Kapoor is the true surprise. She has never been entrusted with such a large amount of heavy-duty material before, and she does not disappoint. The well-matched stars are flanked by well-chosen performers thanks to Mukesh Chhabra’s casting. Manu’s family consists of two domineering sisters (Tanya Abrol and Sawan Rupowali). Goutam and Gourav Sharma, fraternal twins, play Manu’s pals brilliantly. Kanwaljit Singh has a brief but significant role as Maanvi’s father.

All in all, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a remarkable attempt to convert a difficult subject into a film that can even generate money at the box office. The climax, on the other hand, may have been handled differently. While the ending may appear sudden, audiences will undoubtedly appreciate the rest of the film.
