Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi finally hit the theatres and as expected the film is performing quite well at the box office. For a very long time now female centric films have been a very important part of Indian Cinema. Be it Mother India, Nagin or films like Chandni, Seeta Aur Geeta. Heroines of Bollywood have proved that they can run the film on their shoulders.

Mother India (1957)
Starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar the film is a milestone. Honored with innumerable awards the film was directed by Mehboob Khan.
Seeta Aur Geeta (1972)
Written by the iconic duo Salim–Javed (Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar) and directed by Ramesh Sippy, the film was one of a kind. Starring Hema Malini, Dharmendra in dual roles, the film was a comedy drama.
Nagina (1986)
Directed by Harmesh Malhotra, the film starred Sridevi. The film also stars Rishi Kapoor, Komal Mahuvakar, Amrish Puri, Sushma Seth and Prem Chopra.
Khoon Bhari Maang (1988)
This is probably one of the best works of Rekha. The film is directed and produced by Rakesh Roshan. The film was based on the Australian mini-series Return to Eden (1983).
Beta (1992)
Madhuri Dixit has changed the standards of acting with this film. Even though Anil Kapoor was the hero, Madhuri made her strong foot through her performances in the film. Directed by Indra Kumar the film had everything a Bollywood entertainer need.
