Kubbra Sait recalls being teased and called “Cobra” in school “didn’t embrace my name for longest time”
Kubbra’s portrayal of the cuckoo in Sacred Games, arguably one of the first transgender characters seen on film in India, was praised by reviewers and honored with accolades. The renowned actress is currently employed as a writer. “Open Book,” Kubbra Sait’s first book as an author, is a collection of autobiographical essays that details the actress’ formative years in Bengaluru, her battles with bullying and sexual assault, as well as her quest for artistic success and the establishment of standards in the entertainment business.
Kubbra, a Bangalore native, made her acting debut in the minor role she had in Salman Khan and Asin Thottumkal’s Ready. Later, she made appearances in movies like City of Life, Sultan, Ready, Jawaani Jaaneman, and Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare. In the Netflix series Sacred Games, she had her breakout role. She last appeared in the Foundation series on Apple TV+.
During a book interview with ETimes, Kubbra remembered being bullied and hearing the names Cobra and Medusa being used against her.
In an interview, while talking about her book, Kubbra remembered being bullied and hearing the names Cobra and Medusa being used against her. She said, “My name’s Kubbra, I was called Cobra. My hair was curly, I was called Medusa. I have never allowed anyone to body shame me but I was bullied in school because of the color of my eyes. Today I will not meet someone on a date 2 if they haven’t already complimented my eyes on date 1 (Laughs). But the same eyes changed me. I didn’t embrace my name for the longest time. I would have changed it long back if I had a choice. Only when I looked into the meaning of the name (Kubbra means ‘the great one’) did I understand the energy that my name was giving me. How can I not make my life worthwhile?”

She added, “I used to have a fake laugh to be seen and heard. I would be the last one to laugh in a room so that people would notice me and someone pointed that out to me. We don’t realise how much our past memories affect us. I didn’t want these stories to buried inside. I went through highs and lows and wrote it in a non linear way so that anyone can read it from anywhere.”
On June 27, 2022, Kubbra will make his writing debut with the publication of a book titled “Open Book.”
