Adipurush Misses IMAX Release as The Flash Takes Over IMAX Screens

With less than a week remaining for the highly anticipated release of Adipurush, the excitement is palpable. The film’s advance bookings in certain overseas territories have already garnered an overwhelming response, indicating a phenomenal opening in the domestic market. Initially, the plan was to release Adipurush not only in 2D and 3D formats but also in IMAX. However, this plan had to be abandoned.

According to a source cited by the leading portal Bollywood Hungama, Adipurush is arguably one of the grandest films ever made in India, and the filmmakers believed that an IMAX release would be fitting for such a spectacle. Unfortunately, this couldn’t come to fruition due to Warner Bros.’ superhero film, The Flash, also scheduled to release on the same day. As per IMAX rules, two films cannot be released simultaneously in IMAX theaters. Consequently, the decision to release Adipurush in IMAX had to be shelved.

The source further revealed that Adipurush was initially slated for a January 12, 2023 release. The teaser, which premiered on October 2, 2022, prominently featured the IMAX logo. However, the film’s release was subsequently postponed by around five months. Although the assets and posters of Adipurush carried the IMAX logo until the first week of April 2023, it eventually disappeared. Even the trailer, launched on May 9, did not include the IMAX logo.

An industry insider expressed disappointment, stating that a film like Adipurush deserved an IMAX release, but unfortunately, the IMAX management operates under certain rules and constraints.

Apart from Prabhas, Adipurush also stars Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Devdatta Nage, Sunny Singh, and Vatsal Sheth. Directed by Om Raut, known for his work on Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020), the film is set to release worldwide in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam on June 16. Meanwhile, The Flash is slated to release in India on June 15, a day before its North American release.
