Wiki – Allah-Rakha Rahman or A R Rahman was born as A S Dilip Kumar is an Indian Music composer, singer, song writer and philanthropist. He is described as one of the most popular and prolific music composer by Time magazine United States. He was born in Chennai in India in a music family of R K Shekar who was known to compose music for Tamil and Malayam movies. Since his childhood he helped his father in his studio. Later after his demise, Rahman who was merely an age of nine and his family sustained through the rental money collected from the instruments found in his father’s studio. He learnt and mastered a number of keyboard instruments like synthesizer, piano, guitar and harmonium and embarked with a group or band called Nemesis Avenue. He started his music training when he was barely of 11 years. When he attended the age of 23, he converted into his mother’s religion of Islam.

Bio – His break in music world came into the year 1992 when he embarked with his music studio called Panchattan Record Inn at his backyard area. Soon, it became one of the most sophisticated and high end studios in Asia. His career started with a Tamil based movie called Roja directed by Mani Ratnam, which later gave him a Malyalam movie known as Yodha in the same year. This gave him Rajat Kamal Award under the best music category at the National Film Awards platform. He soon established himself as one of the leading music directors in South Indian film world, while later was approached by the Bollywood to compose music for a number of movies. Some of his promising work in Hindi Cinema includes Bombay, Rangeela, Lagaan, Dil Se, Taal, Swadesh, Jeans, Jodha Akbar, Guru, Rockstar, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and many more. He also performs in number of shows and stages not only in India and abroad.

Rahman has been awarded a slew of award both Indian and overseas awards. Some of the prestigious ones include Padma Shri (the Fourth highest civilian award awarded by Government of India), Awadh Samman, awarded by Govt of UP for the exceptional and meritorious contribution in music and similar recognition from the Madhya Pradesh Government. While, his overseas award includes the Honorary Award from Stanford University, two Academy Awards, a BAFTA Award, two Grammy Awards, and Golden Globe, etc. He has received the honorary doctorates from different prestigious institutes including the one from Middlesex University in UK, Miami University in Ohio (USA), Aligarh Muslim University and Anna University in Chennai. In 2010 he received the third-highest civilian honour of India called Padma Bhushan.

Apart from composing music and singing songs, he is also involved in a number of Humanitarian causes. He was appointed as the global ambassador of the Stop TB Partnership, a WHO project in 2004, he also worked with Yusuf Islam (former Cat Stevens) on a song called Indian Ocean to raise funds for the Indian Ocean Tsunami. He is married to a lady called Saira Banu who has three kids – Khatija, Rahima and Ameen all of them are involved in singing and music.
