Taran Adarsh Terms Alpha “A Beautiful Body Without a Soul,” Points to Weak Script

Renowned trade analyst Taran Adarsh delivered a candid assessment of Alpha, stating that while the Yash Raj Films spy venture possessed high technical polish, its weak storyline failed to hold his attention. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, Adarsh summarized the Alia Bhatt and Sharvari starrer in a line that captures his entire review: “It was like a beautiful body without a soul.”
Elaborating on his experience, Adarsh praised the visual scale but highlighted core narrative flaws. He shared that the film made him restless during the preview screening, noting that his disappointment was visibly evident as he walked out of the theater.
Adarsh drew a sharp contrast between Alpha and YRF’s recent romantic hit Saiyaara, recalling how he left the theater after Saiyaara with a smile, whereas Alpha left him thoroughly disappointed despite having vast resources at its disposal. He also admitted entering the screening with Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar another spy-universe film in mind, hoping Alpha would match or surpass its standard, though it ultimately fell short.
Reflecting on Yash Raj Films’ legacy, Adarsh noted that while the studio built its identity on iconic romances as highlighted in The Romantics documentary recent action outings like War 2 and Alpha haven’t yielded the expected results. However, he emphasized that a major studio should never box itself into a single genre.
Citing successes like Ek Tha Tiger and the Mardaani franchise alongside Rani Mukerji’s stellar performance, Adarsh asserted that audience reception ultimately hinges on the strength of the film itself, regardless of whether it is a romance, action feature, or comedy.
