Ranveer Singh Issues Public Apology After Mimicking Rishab Shetty from Kantara: Chapter 1; Social Media Backlash Prompts Clarification

Ranveer Singh has responded to the controversy sparked by his recent on-stage imitation of Rishab Shetty’s character from the film Kantara: Chapter 1 at the International Indian Film Festival (IFFI) in Goa. A video of the actor reenacting a dramatic scene went viral online, drawing widespread criticism and accusations of disrespect toward Rishab Shetty, Indian culture, and religious sentiments.

During the festival, Ranveer enthusiastically mimicked the sequence where the spirit of Chamundi Diva possesses Shetty’s character, entertaining the live audience, including Rishab himself, who was seen laughing. However, the reaction on social media was far from positive. The backlash intensified when a Hindu group filed a police complaint alleging that Ranveer’s imitation was offensive.

In response, Ranveer took to social media on Tuesday to issue a heartfelt apology. He clarified, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.” He added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”

Several clips circulating online showed Rishab Shetty cautioning Ranveer against imitating the sacred scene, which further fueled online trolling and debate about whether the actor had crossed a line despite the jovial nature of the event.

Ranveer’s apology underscores his respect and admiration for Rishab Shetty and Kantara, a film acclaimed for its authentic depiction of coastal Karnataka’s cultural and spiritual heritage. Although Shetty has not publicly commented on the apology, the two were seen sharing friendly moments on stage during the festival.

As discussions about cultural sensitivity in public performances continue, Ranveer’s clarification seeks to calm tensions and reaffirm his respect for the diverse traditions of India.
