Ram Kapoor Faces Backlash for Remarks on Smriti Irani in Recent Interview; Netizens Slam Actor Online

Ram Kapoor, the well-known television and film actor, has once again found himself at the center of a social media uproar following his remarks about the success rates of overweight men versus women in the entertainment industry. In a recent interview with Humans of Bombay, Kapoor’s comments, particularly his reference to actress-turned-politician Smriti Irani, ignited significant backlash online.

Remarks on Weight and Success

In discussing the hurdles faced by overweight actors, Kapoor stated, “She was my size as a woman and probably more successful than me. It’s just that she left earlier, and that was Smriti Irani. When she started Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi to when she ended, she was huge. See the first year of Kyunki and the last year of Kyunki, she’s as big as I am. But equally successful.” He acknowledged, “It will be difficult for another guy to do it, I agree. But Smriti did it; she did it with all that weight.”

Backlash on Social Media

These comments quickly gained traction on Reddit, where users criticized Kapoor for seemingly prioritizing Irani’s weight over her talent and contributions. One user remarked, “Did he explicitly take her name? It seems like he wants more attention for his weight loss whichever way possible. Attention Whore Alert.” Another added, “Weight loss has made his mind go cuckoo.” Critics argued that Irani’s success was more about audience relatability than her size, with one user stating, “Has he considered that Smriti Irani, for all her flaws, is a better actor than he is?”
Some users highlighted the challenges Irani faced while filming, noting, “She had two kids while doing the show and didn’t have time to lose weight. She literally had to come back to shoot two days after having a kid.” Another commenter pointed out their past collaboration, saying, “Yes, and Ram Kapoor of all people should remember how thin she was considering they literally starred opposite each other in Kavita.”

Ongoing Controversies

This incident follows another backlash against Kapoor for trivializing sexual assault during promotional activities for his web series Mistry, leading to his removal from promotional events for the show. As the criticism continues to mount, Ram Kapoor has yet to respond to the latest wave of disapproval.
