Release of Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan’s The Legend of Maula Jatt in India Remains Uncertain

The highly anticipated Indian release of the Pakistani blockbuster The Legend of Maula Jatt, featuring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, has encountered yet another setback. Despite the excitement surrounding its debut, the film has been indefinitely postponed due to undisclosed reasons. This marks the second cancellation of its Indian release in less than a year. Originally, the film’s distributor, Zee Studios, had slated it for release on October 2 in select areas of Punjab and New Delhi. However, reports indicate that the necessary clearances from the Indian government have not been secured, leading to this postponement.
According to Mid-Day, there have been no official comments from Zee Studios, but industry insiders speculate that concerns about potential protests and disruptions from certain political groups may have influenced the decision. Similar apprehensions resulted in the cancellation of the film’s previous release attempt in December 2022. A source noted, “The film was expected to receive clearance from the I&B Ministry on September 27, but that hasn’t happened. The prints were supposed to be delivered on Tuesday, but we’ve heard it won’t be showing from Wednesday.”The cancellation has disappointed many fans eagerly awaiting the film’s theatrical debut in India. The Legend of Maula Jatt had the potential to be the first Pakistani film to receive a wide release in India in over a decade.
A trade analyst commented, “I don’t think there is government pressure. The issue seems to be the risk of property damage due to protests from fringe groups. If released, this film could foster cross-cultural exchange. It’s possible the release could be postponed until Friday, but the silence from the trade world and the studio suggests it may be halted again, just like in 2022.”This ongoing uncertainty highlights the challenges Pakistani filmmakers face when trying to enter the Indian market. The political and cultural complexities between the two nations often create barriers to collaboration.
Last December, The Legend of Maula Jatt faced a similar fate, with its planned release thwarted by political opposition. Following that setback, Zee Studios hoped for a successful launch in Punjab, but recent internal discussions have led to a reassessment of the film’s theatrical prospects. An insider revealed, “We can’t risk property damage.
