Shahid Kapoor Opens Up About Disliking His Role in Padmaavat: ‘I Felt Trapped in a Challenging Mindset’

Shahid Kapoor, the popular Bollywood actor, has opened up about his dissatisfaction with his portrayal in the period drama film Padmaavat. Despite playing the character of Maharawal Ratan Singh, Shahid admitted that he felt ‘uptight’ in the role and expressed a desire to revisit and approach it differently, given the opportunity.

Released in 2018 and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Padmaavat narrates a tale of bravery and sacrifice, showcasing the unwavering determination of a Rajput queen who chooses death over surrendering herself to a tyrant’s desires. The film features Deepika Padukone in the lead role as Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as her husband Maharawal Ratan Singh, and Ranveer Singh as the antagonist Alauddin Khilji. Padmaavat enjoyed tremendous success at the box office.

During a recent conversation with Humans of Bombay, Shahid Kapoor was asked which character he would like to revisit and portray differently. The actor specifically mentioned Maharawal Ratan Singh from Padmaavat, confessing, “I did not like myself. I was so uptight. I think I did not bring out other elements of that personality, I got stuck in a headspace. I am being candid, maybe other people liked me, but I did not.”

In the past, Shahid had also shared that he felt like an outsider on the sets of Padmaavat. Speaking to DNA, he revealed, “I’m used to being the favorite of all my filmmakers. This was the first time that I was like an outsider. When you work with a team that has worked together, you are kind of an outsider and it takes time for you to break through that barrier.”

In recent times, Shahid Kapoor appeared in the web series Farzi alongside Raashi Khanna and Vijay Sethupathi. His upcoming project is Ali Abbas Zafar’s action-thriller film, Bloody Daddy, which is set to stream on Jio Cinemas on June 9. Fans eagerly await Shahid’s future performances, hoping to witness his versatile acting skills in diverse roles.
