Fawad Khan-Vaani Kapoor Starrer Abir Gulaal Set for Global Release on August 29: Report

Fans of Fawad Khan in India were thrilled when his Bollywood comeback film, Abir Gulaal, was initially scheduled for a May 9 release. However, the tragic Pahalgam attack on April 22 sparked widespread outrage against Pakistani artists working in Bollywood, leading to intense industry backlash. As a result, Abir Gulaal was postponed indefinitely, with many fearing the film might never release.
Now, according to a report by Biz Asia Live, Abir Gulaal is set to hit cinemas globally on August 29. The film has also been renamed Aabeer Gulaal. The report does not specify details about an India release, but industry insiders suggest that given the current anti-Pakistani sentiment, it is unlikely the film will receive theatrical distribution in India. An insider shared, “The makers of Abir Gulaal will likely follow the path of Sardaar Ji 3. That film, starring Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, was denied a release in India but went on to achieve significant success overseas.
Similarly, Chal Mera Putt 4 also released exclusively outside India and became a major hit.” It remains to be seen whether Abir Gulaal will emulate the box office success of these Punjabi films internationally. Before the attack, promotional activities for Abir Gulaal were in full swing.
The music launch event, held on April 19 at Global Village in Dubai, received enthusiastic responses from fans and media alike. However, following the Pahalgam attack, the film’s songs were removed by the audio company Saregama just two days later, marking a sudden halt in promotions. With its global release date now confirmed, anticipation builds to see how Abir Gulaal will perform amid the complex political and cultural climate.
