Vivek Agnihotri Unveils The Bengal Files Trailer on Direct Action Day in Kolkata — Why the Date Is Significant

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, known for progpanda filmsl ike The Kashmir Files, has launched the trailer of his upcoming intense drama The Bengal Files. Produced by Agnihotri alongside Abhishek Agarwal and Pallavi Joshi, this film is the latest installment in the acclaimed Files trilogy and is being hailed as the director’s boldest project to date. The trailer launch took place in Kolkata on August 16, 2025—a deliberate choice to coincide with the anniversary of Direct Action Day, a tragic and pivotal event in India’s pre-independence history.
On August 16, 1946, a call by the Muslim League for a separate Muslim state escalated into widespread communal violence in Calcutta, resulting in devastating loss of life and destruction. One notable figure from this dark chapter was Gopal Mukherjee, who rallied local youth to protect Hindu communities. Agnihotri explained the importance of the date, saying, “We chose this day for the trailer launch because of what happened in Calcutta on August 16, 1946. While the Muslim League’s protest escalated into a genocide of Hindus, Gopal Mukherjee stood as a protector.
This event and its legacy inspired our decision.” The Bengal Files trailer is unflinching and powerful. Set against West Bengal’s turbulent political past, it presents gripping testimonies, stark imagery, and impactful dialogues. A striking line from the trailer states, “Yeh Pachim Bangal hai, yaha do constitution chalta hai, ek Hinduao ka, ek Musalmanon ka,” while another proclaims, “Sirf Zameen ka tukda nahi, Bharat ka light house hai Bangal.”Agnihotri described the film as “a wake-up call… a roar that Bengal will not become another Kashmir.” He added, “Launching the trailer in Kolkata lends authenticity to this untold story of Hindu genocide.
The nation must prepare—if Kashmir hurt you, Bengal will haunt you.” Pallavi Joshi, who also stars in the film, remarked, “This film reveals a harsh reality that society needs to confront. Every performance comes from deep truth, making the story incredibly powerful. It’s cinema with a mission to uncover a truth long ignored. I hope the trailer receives the same warmth as our teaser.” Check trailer:
