Veteran Actor Girish Karnad Passes Away At 81

A sad day there for the fans of Girish Karnad, who is among the legends of Kannada theatre and writing. The actor is no more as we have lost him at the age of 81. As per reports, the veteran died at his residence today morning sharp at 8.30 am. The reason behind his death was the age-related symptoms claimed the official reports of the CM office. Sources close to his family revealed that the death of the veteran actor was due to the failure of multiple organs in his body.
Just after the demise of the actor, the state announced 3-days mourning for him and schools and colleges were given a holiday for the same. The actor was born in Matheran a hill station close to Mumbai in 1938 and was brought up at places like Dharward and Sirsi in Karnataka. His love for theatre grew up in his early days and soon he got engaged with theatre groups. He did his graduation in Dharward studying Economics, Political Science and Philosophy and later went to Oxford for his higher studies to emerge as a Rhodes scholar.
He then turned to write full time and his first play came in 1961 called Yayati and since then it was no looking back as he did much literary work in this language. He acted in a number of Bollywood and South Indian films as well. The popular one was Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai. People still remember him since the popular TV shows like Malgudi Days and Indradhanush. He was awarded prestigious awards like Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Jnanpith Award.
