Vasan Bala takes responsibility for Jigra’s box office performance: “Alia Bhatt trusted me with the decision

Film director Vasan Bala has spoken out following the disappointing box office performance of his film Jigra, which has been labeled as Alia Bhatt’s “lowest box office opener” to date. In an interview with Fever FM, Vasan acknowledged the need to analyze what went wrong, emphasizing that it is his duty to “deliver box office” results. Regarding Jigra being Alia’s lowest opener, Vasan remarked, “She is everyone’s first choice. She could have been on any other film set, but she chose Jigra during that time. She placed her trust in me with that decision. Therefore, it is my responsibility to ensure box office success, as filmmaking is a business too.
He further stated, “That’s why I need to analyze the situation. Kuch toh hua hai na (Something has happened, right)? Something has kept people away; they didn’t feel compelled to come to the theater. If any actor chooses to invest their time, it should be worth it.”On its opening day, Jigra garnered only ₹4.55 crore in India. Prior to this, Alia’s 2014 film Highway had a lower opening at ₹3.48 crore. Since then, all of Alia’s films have typically earned ₹7 crore or more, except for Kapoor & Sons. As of now, Jigra, which was released on October 11, has made approximately ₹27.30 crore according to Sacnilk.com. Apart from its lackluster box office performance, Jigra has faced several controversies even before its release. In a pre-release interview,
Vasan expressed his frustration when producer Karan Johar forwarded a rough draft of the script to Alia via email. Karan later criticized the “gore misinterpretation” of his remarks, urging people to read interviews in their entirety before jumping to conclusions.Shortly after, Dharma Productions announced it would not hold pre-release screenings for its films, calling it a “necessary step” to maintain excitement around the movie-watching experience. Actor Divya Khossla also accused Jigra of plagiarism, claiming the film mirrored the plot of her previous movie, Savi. Additionally, Bijou Thaangjam, an actor from Manipur, alleged “unprofessional behavior” from the casting team of Jigra. Amid the controversy, Vasan has deactivated his X account.
