Saas, Bahu, Aur Flamingo Review: An engrossing crime drama that will have you guessing till the conclusion

Crime drama is a genre that has been overstuffed in recent years, with filmmakers exploring new facets of the criminal world virtually every other day with new shows and documentaries, and most of these shows fail to live up to the expectations. Now Disney+Hotstar is bringing us yet another unique crime drama with Homi Adajania’s ‘Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo’. So I initially decided to keep my expectations on the lower side but surprisingly I’m proven wrong as this new eight episode series not only goes over the expectations but also surprised us with it’s unique content.
The story of Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo begins in a little town in the fictional Rujh, where matriarch Rani Maa alias Savitri (Dimple Kapadia) operates an underground drug plant. Rani Maa, together with her daughter Shanta (Radhika Madan) and daughters-in-law Bijli (Isha Talwar) and Kajal (Angira Dhar), manufactures and sells an outstanding grade drug known as the Flamingo. Rani Baa takes tremendous pride in her work and has earned a fortune for herself. Â They are conducting business without the knowledge of Rani Baa’s sons.
Dimple Kapadia absorbed her character’s fierceness quite easily. She effortlessly plays the character of a Rani Maa, from the special regional dialect to the appearance and body language to speaking the tongue. She has completely immersed herself in that character without ever feeling like she is acting. Her powerful screen presence lends the necessary dimension to the tale and makes the series’ events credible.
The two daughters-in-law, Isha Talwar and Angira Dhar, are fiery bahus like no other, and both have done an excellent job. They both provide emotional depth to their characters without ever overdoing it with their performances. It’s a tightrope to walk, to come across as no-nonsense tough women who don’t mind doing illegal activities but at the same time do not make the audience despise them. And all female actors managed to pull off this tough act with ease.
Deepak Dobriyal is virtually unrecognisable in the series. For the most part, I couldn’t tell who was playing the monk, and I believe that speaks something about his great acting abilities. His character evokes a sense of frightening mystery as one attempts to piece together his function and link to everything.

In short, the series gets 10/10 for the performances of the entire cast, including performers who don’t get much screen time. Homi Adajania, the show’s creator, deserves credit for this as well. Homi, who is known for creating out-of-the-box stories such as Cocktail (2012), Finding Fenny (2016), and Angrezi Medium (2020), does an excellent job of creating a unique and distinct story that allows actors to showcase their talents while remaining grounded in reality.
Final Verdict: Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo is a show that is brilliant in setting up a story and ventures into an unfamiliar territory without losing its ground. If you enjoy watching crime dramas then Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo is a must watch series for you.
