Shilpa Shetty’s 15-year-old obscenity case involving Hollywood megastar Richard Gere has been discharged by the Mumbai court. While clearing the actress, Ballard Pier Court Metropolitan Magistrate Ketaki M. Chavan stated in her decision that she had reviewed the case records, notably the allegation, and found that Shilpa Shetty was the victim of Gere’s alleged act.
A person filed an obscenity case against Shilpa Shetty in 2007 after the American actress kissed her on the stage during a public charity function to raise AIDS awareness. The following is a detailed account of what transpired.
At the star-studded event in the national capital, Shilpa and Richard had shared the stage. The media and paparazzi were drawn to their presence. Richard, on the other hand, took Shilpa’s hand and kissed it when she was on stage. The actor from Hollywood didn’t stop there. He then took Shilpa in his arms, bent her back in an awkward dance position, and kissed her on the face a few times.
Shilpa had been rattled by Richard’s sudden move. Their uncomfortable kiss, on the other hand, became the gossip of the town, drawing the wrath of many political workers. They began to claim that the two movie stars had degraded Indian culture. Many people also criticised Shilpa for not standing up to Richard when he committed the act.
Richard apologised to his loving ‘Indian friends’ if he had “offended” anyone because the reactions were so strong. “What is most important to me is that my intentions as an HIV/AIDS advocate be made clear and that my friends in India understand that it has never been nor could it ever be my intention to offend you. If that had happened, of course it is easy for me to offer a sincere apology,” Richard had said in a statement.
His letter of apology arrived a day after a Jaipur court issued an arrest warrant for him. Following the issue, the actor felt bad about Shilpa. “I assure you, I have utmost respect for her, and she knows this. Of course, I’ve felt terrible that she should carry a burden that is no fault of hers. The burden is mine and no one else,” he had said.
Richard had mentioned how he kissed Shilpa on stage in his letter. “My clumsy attempt at a Shall We Dance move was a naive misread of Indian customs and I assure you nothing more,” he had said
