The Sabarmati Report Box Office Day 2: Vikrant Massey’s Film Sees Earnings Rise, but Trails Behind 12th Fail in Growth

The Sabarmati Report has made headlines with its box office performance on its second day. Directed by Dheeraj Sarna and featuring Vikrant Massey, the film was the only Bollywood release this week. According to reports from Sacnilk, the thriller saw a modest increase in earnings on Saturday, bringing in ₹2 crore, up from its opening day collection of ₹1.25 crore. This opening marks the highest for Vikrant as a lead actor, surpassing his previous sleeper hit, 12th Fail, which debuted at ₹1.1 crore.
However, while The Sabarmati Report had a stronger opening than 12th Fail, it is unlikely to replicate the same level of growth. On its second day, 12th Fail earned ₹2.51 crore, indicating a more significant upward trend compared to the current film. Ultimately, 12th Fail went on to earn ₹56.38 crore at the domestic box office during its run, setting a high bar for future projects. The Sabarmati Report is inspired by the real-life events surrounding the burning of the Sabarmati Express in Godhra. The film explores the ideological clash between Hindi-speaking journalists and their English counterparts, with the backdrop of tragic events shaping the narrative.
Alongside Vikrant, the film features performances from Ridhi Dogra and Raashii Khanna. The Hindustan Times review praised the film, stating, “Decent performances from Vikrant Massey and others help keep this intense film on track despite deviations in the middle.”Looking ahead, Vikrant Kumar will next appear in Zero Se Restart, a film about the making of 12th Fail, set to release in cinemas on December 13. With a busy slate ahead, both Vikrant and the film industry are poised for an exciting season.
According to an excerpt from the Hindustan Times review of the film, “The second half of the screenplay, crafted by Avinash Singh Tomar and Arjun Bhandegaonkar, descends into chaos. The pursuit of truth becomes repetitive as Raashii Khanna’s character, Amrita Gill, and Samar continue their investigation. Eventually, it becomes challenging to keep track of the developments. However, the film finds redemption in its final scene, where Vikrant Massey breaks the fourth wall, giving a poignant identity to the 59 individuals who lost their lives in the Godhra incident.”
