Anushree Mehta to Direct Remake of Rajesh Khanna’s Bawarchi

Renowned filmmaker Anushree Mehta has taken the helm to direct the much-anticipated remake of the late legendary actor Rajesh Khanna’s iconic film, ‘Bawarchi,’ a move that has stirred excitement among cinephiles and fans alike.

Originally helmed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee in 1972, ‘Bawarchi’ featured Rajesh Khanna alongside Jaya Bachchan and Asrani. Interestingly, it was a remake of the 1966 Bengali film ‘Galpo Holeo Satti,’ starring Rabi Ghosh, directed by Tapan Sinha. Enthused by the prospect of directing the remake, Anushree expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “When my business partner Abir Sengupta (Jaadugar Films), Sameer Raj Sippy and I decided to produce these three iconic films, we were committed to remaking them with utmost love and respect. During our discussions about ‘Bawarchi,’ Abir and Sameer unanimously felt that I should take on the role of writer and director for the remake.”

“They were convinced that I could narrate the story in a manner that would do justice to the original. We shared a common vision, and I wholeheartedly accepted the role of writer-director,” she added.

Anushree emphasized that the adaptation would reflect her “confidence, honesty, and sensitivity.” She expressed her intent to contemporize the narrative, making it more relevant to today’s world while preserving the essence and purpose of the original. Drawing inspiration from Hrishida’s approach in recreating the film for his era, she aims to retell the classic story of ‘Bawarchi’ in a manner that resonates with family audiences of all generations, creating an enduring and cherished family experience.

Taran Adarsh also confirmed the same:
