Imtiaz Ali on “Jab We Met 2”: Why Create a Sequel When Audiences Still Cherish the Original

Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor’s beloved romantic comedy, Jab We Met, holds a special place in the hearts of fans. Directed by Imtiaz Ali and released in 2017, the film continues to captivate audiences and even made a comeback in theaters this Valentine’s Day. Videos from the screenings further prove the enduring love for Jab We Met. But the burning question remains: will there be a sequel?
Fans have been eagerly awaiting an update, yet Imtiaz Ali has neither confirmed nor denied the possibility. In a recent interview, he was once again pressed for a comment. Imtiaz, the director behind the acclaimed Amar Singh Chamkila, hinted that the chances are slim. With a playful laugh, he said, “Why have a sequel to Jab We Met? If people want to continue savoring the film, they can always watch the original! There needs to be a story and a purpose to make Jab We Met 2.
But let’s see if it happens. Never say never!” Is Imtiaz Ali apprehensive about Jab We Met 2 suffering the same fate as Love Aaj Kal? With a mischievous smile, he responded, “I made Love Aaj Kal a second time, and people didn’t love it as much (laughs). Just kidding! That’s not the reason why I don’t want to make a sequel to Jab We Met. But unless there’s a truly passionate reason, one shouldn’t go ahead with it.”
However, the filmmaker expressed his desire to collaborate with Kareena once again. He emphasized that it shouldn’t be a mere collaboration for the sake of it. The project has to be “better or completely different,” he explained, showcasing his commitment to creating exceptional work with the talented actress.
