Supreme Court Grants Interim Relief to Rajpal Yadav in Cheque Dishonour Cases
Actor Rajpal Naurang Yadav has secured temporary relief from the Supreme Court in a series of long-standing cheque dishonour cases. A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana exempted Yadav from surrendering for the time being. However, this protection is contingent upon the actor depositing ₹5 crore with the Supreme Court Registry by Wednesday.
The interim order follows an urgent oral mentioning of petitions filed by Rajpal Yadav and his wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, through Advocate-on-Record Saurabh Trivedi. The legal trouble stems from financial disputes and dishonored cheques involving M/s Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd., connected to loan transactions and payments for the actor’s production venture.
Previously, the High Court under Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma had ordered that sentences handed to Yadav across seven distinct cases would run concurrently. The High Court directed Yadav to pay ₹1.05 crore in each of the seven cases, comprising ₹1,04,75,000 as compensation to the complainant and ₹25,000 to the State per case. Additionally, Radha Yadav was directed to pay ₹5,51,380 to the complainant in each of those seven matters.
During those earlier proceedings, the High Court noted that ₹2.25 crore had already been paid and released to the complainant. It ordered that this sum be adjusted against the final fine and compensation obligations. To allow the couple time to appeal, the High Court had suspended Yadav’s sentence for two months so he could approach the apex court.
With the Supreme Court now stepping in, Yadav has gained a temporary reprieve from immediate incarceration. His ultimate protection will depend on fulfilling the condition to deposit the required ₹5 crore directly into the Registry within the specified deadline while the higher court considers the broader merits of his appeal.
