Will Smith slaps Chris Rock for a joke made at Jada Pinkett Smith at Oscars 2022; apologises later!

Actor Will Smith won an Oscar for his role in King Richard, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green.

During his winning speech, the actor became overwhelmed and burst into tears. Earlier in the evening, Will made headlines when he slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. He said Jada reminded him of GI Jane 2. Will warned Chris and told him to stay away from his wife.

At his acceptance speech, Will Smith said, “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world.” He added, “I want to apologise to Academy, I want to apologise to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I am not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.”

“Thank you. I hope the Academy invites me back,” Will Smith said, at the end of his speech.

The other nominees for Best Actor were, Javier Bardem for Being the Ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power of the Dog, Andrew Garfield for Tick, TickBoom!, and Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth

Meanwhile, Reinaldo Marcus Green’s biographical sports film King Richard is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Zach Baylin. It is based on the life of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. The film also stars Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn, and Jon Bernthal in addition to Will Smith.

The Oscars is hosted this year by comedians Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer, as well as actress Regina Hall. The ceremony began at 5.30 a.m. IST on Monday, according to Indian Standard Time (March 28). The Oscars 2022 will be shown on Star Movies, Star Movies HD, and Star World. The Academy’s social media channels are also providing live information. In addition, you can watch the live telecast on Disney+ Hotstar.

The Academy has now released a statement regarding the incident. They also mentioned that they do not condone violent behaviour.

Sharing the statement on Twitter, the official account of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said, “The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”

Now after the statement fans are left confused on whether Smith will be asked to return his honour after the incident.
