Maanav (Ayushmann Khurrana), a Bollywood megastar action hero and popular youth idol, falls from grace when he gets caught up in a dramatic real-life situation that compels him to flee for his safety.
Ayushmann Khurrana’s character Maanav is a buffed-up Bollywood action hero who flaunts his celebrity. Maanav quickly loses sight of reality, especially when the adversary, Bhoora Solanki (Jaideep Ahlawat), the Municipal Councillor of Mandothi village (Haryana), blames the star for his brother’s strange death. As a result, they engage in a game of cat and mouse. Will the on-screen action hero be able to hold his own when real-life heavy action unfolds?
Review:
Anirudh Iyer’s directorial debut digs into celebrity culture and the ephemeral nature of notoriety. The basic topic of this 132-minute action-packed drama is that most renowned people are vulnerable to public backlash and media trials. ‘An Action Hero’ appears to be a straightforward vengeance plot, but the screenplay changes it into a twisted tale of a celebrity who finds himself in an unbelievable circumstance. It’s a meaty premise, and Iyer, who co-wrote the picture with Neeraj Yadav, has a firm hold on it for the most part
Iyer takes his time establishing up the story, spending the most of the first half doing so. The second half, on the other hand, cranks up the pace and becomes an all-out action picture with various components to keep you engaged. The issue is the random people introduced during the film who don’t offer much to the drama but add to the film’s duration.
It’s all Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat, who hold the film’s plot together. Ayushmann is given sufficient opportunity to play Maanav’s multi-layered character, who is a powerful, arrogant, and flashy performer, yet weak when fate forces him to live like a regular guy fighting for his life. He works hard to make Maanav’s persona appealing. The actor’s physical metamorphosis for the film is visible, lending credence to his action-hero persona. Jaideep’s acting and Haryanvi accent are excellent. His character lacks substance, although he delivers some of the film’s funniest seeti-maar punches.
The kindness in his character causes a degree of doubt in his acts, which contributes to the humour of the moments. There is a good mix of comedy and action, as well as some memorable laugh-out-loud dialogue.
The dance routines by Nora Fatehi and Malaika Arora to repeated renditions of ‘Jehda Nasha’ and ‘Aap Jaisa Koi,’ respectively, add oomph. The film’s tone is established by the background soundtrack, which compliments the developing narrative.
Not everything in the narrative makes sense, and you wish the picture was tighter, but it has a solid amount of action and humour, backed up by terrific performances. The most intriguing aspect of ‘An Action Hero’ is not so much the tale as it is witnessing Ayushmann Khurrana put on the armour of an action hero and flex his muscles (literally) on film. Perhaps you could go to the movies for that.
Action Hero Verdict:
An Action Hero is a film where you need to keep all your focus and intelligence at a point because, while it is masala entertainment, it is not mindless and Ayushmann Khurrana steers in the correct path!
