Rangoon , being a Vishal Bharadwaj film, got much attention from public. Widely promoted on the social media platform by the three leading actors Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut, the movie was lauded by celebs after it’s premiere. But unfortunately the same good response did not transpire on the box office when it released on Friday. Many trade verdicts have termed the opening of the film as dismal. The trade collection figure of the film shows around 6.24 crore as the first day collection.
Rangoon got mostly favorable reviews on the internet. But the common public did not turn up in the expected numbers to term this film as a successful opening. This is said to be Vishal Bharadwaj’s most expensive project till date. The first day collection was mostly a moderate collection day at the box office. Friday was a Mahashivratri Holiday which was strategic placing of the release date of the film. But it turned out to be not so successful strategy.
Rangoon got a major media coverage mainly for the promotion tactics and as it was a war drama adapted from the Hollywood classic Casablanca. The first day’s theatre occupancy was around 55% in major cities of the country. It was expected to do good business in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi. It recorded a total occupancy 65% in these states which is low.
