“‘Saala Copy Karta Hai’: Shaktiman fame actor Mukesh Khanna Recalls Big B’s Remark That Left a Lasting Impact

Mukesh Khanna recently addressed allegations of copying Amitabh Bachchan, sharing an anecdote about a remark supposedly made by the Bollywood legend that left a lasting impression on him. Khanna revealed that one of Amitabh’s friends overheard him commenting about Mukesh, suggesting he was imitating the superstar. Despite meeting Amitabh on several occasions afterward, Mukesh noted that they never collaborated or discussed the alleged comment during their encounters.
In a recent appearance on the YouTube channel Hindi Rush, Mukesh recounted, “I starred in an advertisement where I sprayed perfume, and girls turned to look at me. A person present during the ad’s screening in a theater, who was a friend of Amitabh, told me that Amit ji has a certain style. He mentioned that Amit ji saw the ad and commented, ‘Saala copy karta hai (He’s copying me).’ You can call me self-respecting or stubborn, but I responded, ‘Pagal hai tu, woh aisa bolege? (Are you mad? Do you think he’d say this?)’ Yet, that sentence lingered in my mind.”Mukesh also reflected on how the media interpreted this comment, acknowledging that many suggested Amitabh Bachchan’s single statement had “finished his career.”
He dismissed this notion, asserting, “We never worked together, so to claim that Amitabh Bachchan ended my career is a nonsensical statement.” He recalled an interaction with a journalist who attempted to provoke him by asking if Amitabh had ‘sabotaged’ his career with just one comment. Mukesh firmly responded, “Are you mad?”He noted that he has encountered Amitabh “ten times” since the alleged remark, sharing one memorable meeting on a flight from London to India, where they exchanged pleasantries before taking their seats. Mukesh clarified that his career choices were never influenced by Amitabh, emphasizing, “I starred in a few films because I signed a limited number of projects. Amitabh didn’t prevent me from taking roles in Mahabharat or Shaktimaan.”
