This Friday it is a solo release that comes in the form of Rock On 2. So, it’s the first film after two releases from Diwali with films like ADHM and Shivaay. Rock On 2 is a sequel of the 2007 release of a movie with the same title, while the film is directed by Shujaat Saudagar, while it is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under the banner of Excel Entertainment. The film has a music from the talented trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, while the film has the same old star cast including the new ones as well. These include Farhan Akhtar, Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Prachi Desai and Shashank Arora in the key roles. The movie is directed by Shujaat Saudagar while the story is jotted down by Abhishek Kapoor and Pubali Chaudhuri. Time to dig in deep to get the crux of the film as under:
Story
The film starts somewhere it stopped in the prequel wherein the old buddies meet to start their band called Magik win the contest and end up making an album. Then comes the tragedy of losing one member in it, which creates a kind of vacuum which has to be filled by someone as talented as Rob. In the sequel you have one new face called Jiah played by Shraddha Kapoor who happens to be an aspiring singer. She is an ardent fan of original film and is seen finding out the recurring theme of the music band and soon joins as the new face despite her parents not agreeing on her career choice. It was Farhan who brought her in the band and allow her to unleash the talents she had.
Review
Farhan Akhtar is known to bring out scripts with difference; he and his sister are known to bring out stories that are fresh and interesting. All his previous movies really indicate the same has brought forth some really cool and out of the way stories to tell the world over the silver screen. Rock On 2 is certainly not an exception, when he has tried to add more drama in it adding more as compared to the previous much. However, the prequel was more robust and authentic than the sequel, which is usually the problem of the franchise films. Hence Rock On 2 is again the victim of this comparison game. Much of the drama added in the film makes it a melodramatic piece, which somewhere down the line hampers the entertainment value of the film. The movie starts with the usual note stays lull in the midst and gears up too late in the second half giving the real punch, which was required from first phase to the other.
Star Performances
The film has an interesting star cast who all has given their best to justify their characters the right way over the silver screen. Let’s start with Farhan Akhtar playing Aditya Shroff, well he is an accomplished actor and has tried in this film to do the best over the silver screen. He is a great actor who has done wonders in this film unlike all his previous movies. He has justified the role given to him in a big way which will certain compel the critics to give him the positive words. Next is Arjum Rampal, who is again an okay man in this film but that as Farhan or others in the film. In fact, in many ways, he acts similar to other roles he did so in many ways he appears to be monotonous in his performance. Shraddha Kapoor is really awesome in his performance and has tried to put the right shoe in the character of Jia. Similar is the story with other actors including Purab Kohli, Prachi Desai and Shashank Arora who did well over the silver screen.
Direction, Music and other elements
Direction is par when it comes to Rock On 2, Saudgar has tried his best to bring out a film in a way he wanted but somewhere down the line overdoing of things in terms of emotions and drama have somewhere compromised in terms of quality and content of the movie otherwise the film is okay in many ways. The music is also okay and can be called as the USP of the movie for sure for the reason that it was crafted the best. The other elements like screenplay, editing and other technical elements too remain par in terms of requirements and performance in a way have together helped in shaping up film the best.
Rock On 2 – Last Word
The film Rock On 2 is good in terms of content and story though overdoing of emotions and other things have slightly maligned the movie in some way yet make a worthy watch. Catch some fabulous performances of Farhan and others in the film backed with really decent music that happens to be the crux of the film. Hence giving a decent rating to the film is justified in many ways.
