Punjab and Haryana HC Rejects PIL to Rename Film ‘120 Bahadur’

The forthcoming war epic 120 Bahadur, featuring Farhan Akhtar as Param Vir Chakra recipient Major Shaitan Singh Bhati, has become the center of a legal dispute just days before its release. The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to change the film’s title to ‘120 Vir Ahir’, aiming to better honor the Ahir soldiers who fought in the historic Battle of Rezang La.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Sheel Nagu questioned the petitioners from Sanyukt Ahir Regiment Morcha and families of the fallen soldiers about their insistence on renaming the movie. The Chief Justice remarked, “Why are you so sensitive about what name it should carry? The bravery of soldiers will be portrayed in that two-and-a-half or three-hour film.” He emphasized that the cinematic depiction pays tribute to all 120 men collectively.

The petitioners argued that the film focuses disproportionately on Major Singh, overshadowing the regimental identity and the sacrifices of the 117 Ahir soldiers who fought alongside him. They raised constitutional concerns about equality and proper remembrance, stating, “No single name or face should monopolize the honors that belong to the entire brotherhood of the fallen.”

Advocate Abhinav Sood, representing the producers Excel Entertainment, countered that the film had been approved by both the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Defence Ministry. He described the PIL as premature, based solely on a brief trailer, and assured the court that the full film would acknowledge all soldiers comprehensively in its narrative and credits.

The Union government informed the court that objections regarding the release were being reviewed and a decision would be made within two days. Subsequently, the High Court disposed of the petition but allowed the petitioners to raise concerns again if any issues arise post-release.

About the Film

120 Bahadur dramatizes the legendary 1962 Indo-China clash at Rezang La, fought by Charlie Company, mainly comprising Ahir soldiers led by Major Singh. Set against the harsh backdrop of 18,000 feet altitude and freezing temperatures, the film is scheduled for release on November 21 and promises to portray acts of valor, resilience, and brotherhood.
