Karan Johar Announces Week-Long Digital Detox, Quips “May the Universe Give Me the Strength”
Just days after India’s official Oscar entry Homebound missed out on a final nomination at the 98th Academy Awards, filmmaker Karan Johar announced a temporary break from social media. On Tuesday, January 27, the Dharma Productions chief took to Instagram to reveal he is embarking on a one-week “digital detox” to step away from the online noise.In a candid post, Johar wrote, “Digital Detox for a week! No doom scrolling! No DMs! No posts! May the universe give me the strength to stay away!!!!”

The announcement comes amid a busy period for Johar. While he recently celebrated the blockbuster success of Dhurandhar and Border 2, the past week also brought the disappointment of Homebound missing the final five nominees for Best International Feature Film. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Johar, Homebound had made the top-15 Oscar shortlist in December but was ultimately left out when nominations were announced on January 22.
Despite the setback, Johar publicly expressed his support for Ghaywan, writing last week, “Proud!!! Love you Neeraj Ghaywan for allowing us to bask in your light!”
He also called Homebound one of India’s “finest and most important films.”Though Johar didn’t explicitly connect his digital detox to the Oscar outcome, his mention of avoiding “doom scrolling” suggests a desire to take a break from the flood of online news and negativity.
