OK Jaanu Movie Review

okjaanuposter2

After a couple of weeks, we have a busy Friday of 2017 with two films releasing. These certainly include OK Jaanu. The film is a romantic drama, which is directed by the Saathiya fame director Shaad Ali, while the screenplay and story is given by the veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The film is produced jointly by Mani Ratnam and Karan Johar under their respective banners Madras Talkies and Dharma Productions. The film is an official remake of the south Indian film O Kadhal Kanmani starring Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen. OK Jaanu has Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor in the pivotal roles, who all portray a young couple in a live-in relationship in Mumbai. They are accompanied by actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson who play the supporting roles as an older couple in the film playing the the younger couple’s landlords. The music has been given by the legend A. R. Rahman giving both the film’s score and soundtrack. Gulzar is the dialogue writer of movie who has also given the lyrics for the songs in the film. Time to dig in deep into the film to get the crux of the same as under:

Story

Meet Adi played by Aditya Roy Kapur who is a young game designer from Lucknow. He aspires of immigrating to the United States and living the American dream. At a chance encounter during his friend’s wedding, he gets to meet Tara played by Shraddha Roy Kapoor. The young girl has just completed her graduation from a reputed architecture school graduate and is working in an architecture firm. She aspires to relocate to Paris to pursue higher education to get an edge in her chosen career. The cheerful banter soon gives way to a conversation wherein both the love birds realize that they strongly feel that marriage isn’t for them and moves in together until the time they go their separate ways when career comes calling. With only 10 days left and parting imminent, both Adi & Tara are forced to confront some matters of the heart. So, what happens next is interesting to catch in the close by theatres.

Review

The story and content is very much similar to the South Indian film by Mani Ratnam and has nothing much in difference except the character names, cities and other similar things. So, if you have gone through the erstwhile movie of 2014 in South Indian language then you may not find interesting to catch. In fact, the screen play and other things too appear to the same. Well, this is not the first time when the B Town has copied any film from South but there are many instances to the same and OK Jaanu is no exception. Well, moving ahead, the film can be called as interesting catch considering the cool songs, the love angle, the oomph factors and many more similar things. The movie goers who have not caught neither the story nor the film from the South has much stuff to catch but only suitable for the people who love music, romance and ideas like live in relationship.

Talking about the star performances, there is not much to share except the usual ones coming from the two actors in the lead roles. Let’s start with Aditya Roy Kapur playing the character of Adi in it. Well, he seems to be grooming with passing days and movies but still cannot be called as par who has the knack to absorb the character well and portray the best over the silver screen. in fact, his acting has been very much similar irrespective to the characters he has played in the past and OK Jaanu is no exception. Next is Shraddha Kapoor, well, isn’t an exception though, perhaps her role in the film was similar to the one which somewhere resembles in her real life but nonetheless she has somehow failed to give the kind of gleam, which the character desperately was seeking from her. In other words, both were average in their performances.  However, Naseeruddin Shah in his supporting role was simply awesome and truly deserves the applauds for his performance in the film, others too remained okay.

Direction, Photography, Music and other elements

If we talk about Shaad Ali, he is an able filmmaker. He loves his job the best and leaves no stone unturned to keep things in a proper shape. However, in OK Jaanu, he seems to be lagging behind the aura for which he is popular for. All thanks to the wrong selection of star cast, which has made things bad at least his presence, has stopped the film to move from bad to worse. Talking about cinematography, it’s awesome, they have chosen the locations wisely and so the other things. Music was simply awesome after all it has come along from the legend A R Rahman. The other elements like screenplay, dialogues and editing too remained okay and somehow contributed in boosting up the entertainment value to some extent.

OK Jaanu Last Word

The film is simple and to the point with not much of flora and fauna, however, the kind of performance the film deserved seems to be missing in the movie. The other elements seem to be okay but overall the movie has failed to impress for many reason. This has somewhere hampered the rating of the film, which goes low for sure.

Rating – 3.0
