Nolan Blocks Spidey: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Snatches IMAX Screens From Spider-Man: Brand New Day

July 2026 is shaping up to be one of the biggest months in Indian box-office history for Hollywood, but it comes with a major disappointment for Marvel purists. Sony Pictures India has officially confirmed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will not get an IMAX release in India.

The exclusion of the web-slinging superhero from IMAX screens comes down to a strict contractual block by visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan and his upcoming period epic, The Odyssey.

The Ultimate IMAX Monopoly

The Odyssey, which is historic for being the first film ever shot entirely on IMAX’s 70mm film cameras, releases globally on July 17, 2026. Because of its technical milestone, the film has secured an exclusive, preferential three-week worldwide contract. Every single IMAX screen globally—including those in India—is mandated to play The Odyssey exclusively for three full weeks.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day slated to hit Indian theatres on July 30, 2026, it falls squarely into Nolan’s second week of total IMAX dominance.

An industry source explained to Bollywood Hungama:

“Watching a Nolan film in IMAX is considered a must-see event. Looking at how Oppenheimer (2023) performed, there is an incredibly slim chance that IMAX screens will reduce shows for The Odyssey even after the three-week exclusivity period ends. Because of this scenario, Spider-Man simply loses out.”

Advance Bookings Soar in Alternative Formats

Despite the lack of IMAX screens, the hype for the web-slinger remains massive. Advance bookings for The Odyssey went live on June 8, while ticket sales for Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened on June 17. Tickets for both films are selling rapidly across India.

Responding to a fan’s query on YouTube, Sony Pictures India clarified:

“No IMAX release for Spider-Man: Brand New Day in India, but the film will be available in premium large-format (PLF) screens for an epic big-screen experience.”

Audiences are aggressively booking tickets in alternative premium formats like PXL, 4DX, ScreenX, and Macro XE, which are expected to soften the blow for fans seeking a premium cinematic experience.
