Netflix Launches ‘India Storytelling Initiative’ to Nurture Creative Talent
Netflix has announced the launch of the ‘Netflix India Storytelling Initiative’, marking a major investment in the country’s creative ecosystem. The announcement follows a meeting between Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed the expanding global appeal of Indian content and the company’s long-term commitment to India’s growing entertainment industry.
Over the past decade, Netflix has produced more than 200 Indian Originals, shooting across over 100 locations. Building on this base, the new initiative focuses on talent development by partnering with key Indian institutions. The effort aligns with the Government’s Viksit Bharat @ 2047 vision, targeting skill development across the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sectors to help position India as a global storytelling hub.
Ted Sarandos emphasized that investing in creators is essential to investing in India’s creative future, noting that the initiative aims to empower emerging talent as Netflix enters its next decade in the country.
The first phase introduces two major educational partnerships. Netflix has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) to design industry-focused courses in visual effects and media technology workflows. The streaming platform will also fund 100 scholarships for students studying interactive comics, character animation, virtual art creation, and esports management.
In addition, Netflix is partnering with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) to advance content accessibility. This program will train audio description writers and voice artists to serve audiences with visual and hearing impairments, combining international standards with local narrative traditions.
Through these combined efforts, Netflix aims to expand career opportunities for new creators, build industry capacity, and bring more Indian stories to a global audience.
