Payal Rohatgi sentenced to jail for 9 days for her Nehru post

Bundi court on Monday sent Bollywood actress Payal Rohatgi to Bundi Central Jail till December 24 after rejecting her bail application in a case related to her post on social media. Her post has been allegedly called defamation of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

The court has sent Payal to nine days judicial custody. Payal was formally arrested in Bundi late on Sunday night as the Rajasthan police picked her up from her residence in Ahmedabad on Sunday morning. The Bundi court rejected Payal’s bail plea, saying that the right to freedom of speech is not unlimited under the Indian Constitution.

On October 10, a complaint was filed against Rohatgi under the IT Act at Bundi’s Sadar police station, State Youth Congress General Secretary Charmesh Sharma gave a written complaint to the Bundi police with a clip of the allegedly defamation post. Sharma in his complaint alleged that the video contained indecent comments, which were harmful to the unity and integrity of the country.

Rohatgi had already accepted uploading a post on Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru and other members of the Nehru-Gandhi family in September this year and apologized for it.

Payal Rohatgi’s legal counsel Bhupendra Sahay Saxena said he would file a bail petition in the upper court. Rohatgi’s fiance Sangram Singh was also present in the court on Monday and told the media that Payal’s arrest was politically motivated.
