Nana Patekar, Ganesh Acharya, and Others Acquitted as Court Dismisses 2018 Sexual Harassment Case

The Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai has dismissed actress Tanushree Dutta’s FIR against actor Nana Patekar. The case was filed at the Oshiwara police station on October 10, 2018, concerning an alleged sexual harassment incident that took place on March 23, 2008. In its ruling, the court determined that the case was time-barred under the Limitation Act. Interestingly, the decision came somewhere close to the days of Women’s Day, which is celebrated across the globe to support women empowerment and power.

The police had previously submitted a ‘B summary report’, indicating a lack of evidence to support Dutta’s claims. Furthermore, the court noted that Dutta did not seek condonation for the delay in filing the FIR and found no sufficient grounds to proceed with the case. Despite over 100 people reportedly being present on the set during the alleged incident, no strong evidence emerged to corroborate her allegations.

Advocate Padma Shelatkar, representing Patekar, expressed her clients’ confusion regarding the allegations. “My clients are struggling to understand why these false claims have been made. With a large fan following built through hard work, they believe this was an attempt to tarnish their reputation for ulterior motives,” she stated.

She further emphasized the misuse of the law, asserting, “Some individuals exploit the legal system to target respected figures in the industry, which is both unfair and unethical. This impacts the careers of veterans, leading to significant stress and trauma, which I have personally observed over the past seven years.

“Following the court’s decision, Shelatkar remarked, “Today, the Hon’ble Andheri Magistrate Court dismissed the complainant’s case. This outcome serves as a reminder for those who may be unfairly targeted under the guise of the #MeToo movement.
