Miranda House, DU Students Express Outrage Over Ziddi Girls Trailer: “We’re Portrayed as ‘Porn Watching’ and ‘Man-Chasing’ Girls”

An upcoming web series titled Ziddi Girls, shot at Miranda House, Delhi University, has sparked outrage among the college’s students. Directed by Shonali Bose, the series is set in “Matilda House” (referred to as MH), an elite Delhi college modeled after Miranda House. Students have criticized the show, calling it “derogatory” and accusing it of tarnishing the institution’s reputation. The series, which was filmed on campus with permission from the administration, also features prominent alumnae such as director Shonali Bose and actor Nandita Das, further fueling the backlash.
Many students claim the trailer perpetuates harmful stereotypes about women’s colleges, portraying students in a sensationalized and objectifying manner.“I watched the trailer with my friends and was shocked. It reduces us to female students who watch porn and constantly chase men. It’s so objectifying,” says Jyotsana, a final-year BA (Hons) English student. She adds, “Miranda students are some of the brightest minds in the country. Shonali Bose, who has done commendable work on women empowerment, seems to have taken a very superficial approach here. This portrayal is disappointing and far from relatable.”Students are especially upset that the college’s alumnae, including Nandita Das, were associated with the project. Riddhi, a first-year student, shares her frustration:
“We thought the series would celebrate our college on a big platform. Instead, it demeans our institution. The administration must watch the show before its release to prevent irreversible damage.”Social media has also been flooded with criticism of the trailer, with students accusing the creators of distorting reality for entertainment. Saba Afreen, a BA (Hons) student, comments, “The name Ziddi Girls itself feels derogatory. This is just another exaggerated, profit-driven portrayal of women’s colleges, reinforcing stereotypes and fetishizing women-only spaces like Miranda House.”The controversy continues to grow as students demand accountability from the creators and administration.
