Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Masaan is an Indo-French production film that won several awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films,Manish Mundra, Macassar Productions, Sikhya Entertainment, Arte France Cinema and Pathé Productions have collaborated together to bring to reality a social drama set in the holy city of Varanasi.
Starring actors like Richa Chaddha, Sanjay Mishra, Pankaj Tripathi, Shweta Tripathi, Vineet Kumar, Vicky Kaushal and Nikhil Sahni, the movie offers a power packed performance woven along an evocative storyline. It revolves around Devi, played by RichaChaddha, who is caught by the police, in a hotel roomalong with her boyfriend. Accusing them of indecent behavior, the police try to blackmail her with videotape but agree to let her go if they are paid a bribe.
The poor father Vidyadhar Pathak (Sanjay Mishra), who is in charge of a ghat, where offerings are made post-cremation, is unable to cough up the money. Unapologetic and determined to move on, Devi takes up a job but the sexual advances of co-workers miffs her and she wants to run away. She finds solace in Deepak (Vicky Kaushal), a low-caste, who assists her father on the ghats along with Jhonta (Nikhil Sahni), an orphan.
Masaan raises many questions before the audience and is a mirror of the changes sweeping the Indian landscape whose youth wants to break free from the shackles of caste, class and archaic values. Do watch this excellent tale of struggle and resilience to get invigorating inspirational doses.
