The film by Nandita Das called Manto had a bad start. As expected the film failed to attract audience as it did not have much to offer the audience. The film opened up at Rs 50 lakh on the first day and it went similar on the second and third day as well. The film starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui was seen in a titular role, while the film Manto happens to be based on the life of Indo-Pakistani iconoclast and controversial writer Saadat Hasan Manto. This is the second feature, which happens to be the directorial venture after her film called Firaaq released in 2008.
The film Manto also had Tahir Raj Bhasin, Rasika Dugal and Rajshri Deshpande in the key role, the film premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The movie released along with the movie Batti Gul Meter Chalu, which showcased Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam in the key roles. The film Manto will generate a good amount of post-release buzz that remained at the forefront, since Batti Gul Meter Chalu did well, it managed to hamper the collection of the film Manto. Though with incredible performance in the film Nawazuddin has become a reputed and respected name in the B Town or Hindi cinema. He has the capacity to lure the film lovers to the theatres but with Manto he failed to do so.
The reason being the less awareness and interest about the life of Sadat Hasan Manto who remained a controversial writer in the fifties and the sixties. Despite getting good reviews, the lack of awareness about the character and the man, the film did an average business. As per reports, the film collected 50 lakhs on first day that went ahead a bit on Saturday with collection of 70 lakhs and Sunday went on to score 95 lakhs. This way the first weekend box office collection for Manto went to around 2.15 crore. The film is expected to an average business during the weekdays as well.
