With meager buzz, the film Manto finally hit the screens yesterday. The movie is based on the life of the popular author who worked as a screenwriter in Bombay in the early forties. However, he was forced to leave due to her religious identify, which he never cared of. The film was directed and produced by popular actress Nandita Das. However, it was shocking for her to see most of the morning shows of the film getting cancelled giving a very low collection on the first day. So, it was no first day first show in the morning for the movie. Though the film got a decent review, but in most of the cities, the morning shows was cancelled including Delhi, NCR, Pune, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
Nandita Das reacted on the microblogging site calling the incident hugely disappointing the way the film shows were cancelled in the morning while the rest of the shows had meager occupancy reports. However, the shows were cancelled fearing that there would be no response but at several places people complained that they wanted to see the movie but the mall owners and and multiplex people announced the cancellation. Though the multiplex owners claimed that it was due to technical fault that the film’s morning shows were cancelled.
Well, now talking about the box office collection for the film, it was obviously down for these reasons. The film did not witness much occupancy in the evening shows.
As per reports, the first day box office collection for Manto reached to around 71 lakhs, which is not the figure the makers have expected. In fact, many of the veterans have backed this film for the legendary author and the way the lead actors in the film had performed. It is interesting to see that such films covering the life of legends like Manto has been treated this way. Hopefully, this would develop some amount of word of mouth buzz in the media and the film picks up in the coming two days to score more. So, it’s time to wait and watch. Stay tuned to know more about it and others with us.
