Major Distributors Compete for ‘Awarapan 2’ Theatrical Rights

The upcoming sequel to the 2007 cult classic Awarapan has triggered an intense bidding war among the biggest names in Indian film distribution. Despite the original film’s modest box office performance, its legacy as a masterpiece of music and drama has made Awarapan 2 one of the most high-priority titles for the trade. Last week, the Vishesh Films office saw a steady stream of industry giants eager to secure the all-India theatrical rights for the film.
According to trade sources, the lineup of interested parties includes Zee Studios, Anil Thadani’s AA Films, Pen Marudhar, Jio Studios, and Cinepolis. Notably, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has also joined the fray through its own distribution arm, alongside newer players like Ananya Birla’s Birla Studios. This level of competition has reminded industry veterans of a bygone era when distributors would fiercely outdo one another to land a promising project.
The immense interest stems from the massive “recall value” of the first film, which turned Emraan Hashmi into a tragic action hero icon. Online communities are already buzzing with memes and anticipation, signaling that the sequel is one of the most “heated” properties in the current market. Mukesh Bhatt is reportedly analyzing various offers and is expected to finalize a partner soon to handle the film’s nationwide rollout.
The sequel, slated for an August 14 release, sees the return of Emraan Hashmi in his signature intense avatar. This time, he is joined by Disha Patani and veteran actress Shabana Azmi. While the first installment was helmed by Mohit Suri, Awarapan 2 is directed by Nitin Kakkar, known for his work on Filmistaan. With a powerhouse cast and a prime holiday release window, the film is positioned to be a major cinematic event of the year.
