Lata Mangeshkar is an Indian playback singer and music director. She barely needs any introduction in India among music lovers and even abroad. She was born on 29th September 1929. She was born in Bombay in a classical singer family and theater actor. Needless to say that is how she entered the role of singing. Getting training from her mother, she started singing at an early age. The singer was born as Hema Mangeshkar, however, her mother renamed her as Hema. She is the eldest child in her family with all her three sisters also in the same field. 

She started singing at the age of five and remained the part of her father’s musical plays mostly in Marathi. She had to discontinue her schooling since they did not allow her to carry her sister Asha with her. She is best known for her countless songs. She used to sing both in Hindi and Marathi languages. As her father expired when she was 13 she had to work for a living in 1942 at her native place in Konkan. Later in 1945, she headed to Bombay and started working as a classical music trainer. She continued singing and finally her first break came with the film Aap Ki Seva Mein in 1946.

Then came her second Hindi-language movie Subhadra the same year wherein she sung a song. Since then it was no stopping for the singer. In her early days, she did playback singing for the movies like Tarana, Heer, Bari Behen, Meena Bazaar, Aadhi Raat, Chhoti Bhabi,  Afsana, Aansoo and Adl-e-Jehangir to name a few. She also has worked as a film producer and music director. for the former she made three movies. These include 1953  Vaadal (Marathi), Jhaanjhar (Hindi), Kanchan Ganga (Hindi) and Lekin… (Hindi). As per an estimate, she has sung more than 50K songs in Hindi, Marathi and other languages. 

As a music director she worked for films including Ram Ram Pavhana, Maratha Tituka Melvava, Mohityanchi Manjula, Sadhi Manase, and Tambadi Mati. She even won the music director award for the movie Sadhi Manase. Her film has bagged the best song award. She has won several awards and honors. Some of these include – Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Zee Cine Award for Lifetime Achievements, Dadasaheb Phalke Award,  Maharashtra Bhushan Award, NTR National Award, Legion of Honour, ANR National Award and three National Film Awards to name a few. As far as her personal life is concerned, she is single and never married.
