Nana Patekar’s The Confession Of Mary Set for World Premiere at Toronto International Film Festival
Veteran actors Nana Patekar, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Adil Hussain are teaming up for an upcoming crime drama titled The Confession Of Mary, which is officially selected to make its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, the film revisits one of India’s most chilling and historic judicial mysteries: the infamous 1966 Madatharuvi murder case from Kerala.
Jointly produced by Subhash Kale and Narendra Hirawat under the banners of Camera Take Films Production and N H Studioz, the feature boasts a strong ensemble cast featuring Gautam Rode, Joy Sengupta, Neha Mahajan, Pankhuri Awasthi, and Meenakshi Martins. The screenplay is penned by acclaimed writer C P Surendran, with a background score composed by Amar Mohile.
Set in June 1966, the narrative revolves around the sensational murder of Mariyakkutty, a 43-year-old widow and mother of five, whose body was uncovered near the Madatharuvi stream in Ranni, Kerala. The incident sparked intense nationwide controversy after eyewitnesses reported seeing the victim accompanied by a local Roman Catholic priest shortly before her mysterious death.
Shortly after the investigation began, 37-year-old Father Benedict Onamkulam was arrested by the police. Accused of luring Mariyakkutty under the pretext of securing her employment, the priest was subsequently tried, convicted, and sentenced to death by the District Sessions Court, which seems to be marking the first instance in Indian judicial history where a Catholic priest received capital punishment for murder. However, subsequent legal twists transformed the case into a landmark legal battle.
The Confession Of Mary aims to deliver an intense cinematic exploration of religious faith, institutional power dynamics, and the pursuit of justice. Following its festival screening at Toronto, the makers are expected to announce details regarding its commercial theatrical release date in India and global markets.
