Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies Chosen as India’s Official Entry for Oscars 2025
Kiran Rao’s latest film, Laapataa Ladies, has been officially selected to represent India at the 97th Academy Awards. This announcement was made by the Film Federation of India (FFI), the governing body overseeing Indian cinema.Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, Laapataa Ladies follows the journey of two women searching for their missing husbands. The film’s selection as India’s official entry for the Oscars marks a significant milestone for both Rao and the Indian film industry. The cast features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan in key roles.
“It would be a dream come true if it was chosen for the Oscars,” Rao shared with PTI last week. “However, it’s a process, and I’m hopeful Laapataa Ladies will be considered. I trust that the best film will be selected,” she added.The 97th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 9, 2025, with five films set to be shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film award, the winner of which will be announced during the ceremony.The announcement took place at a Chennai event where Ravi Kottarakara, President of the Film Federation of India, introduced the jury members to the media. Jyoti Deshpande, President of Media and Content at RIL, expressed her excitement, stating, “The selection of Laapataa Ladies as India’s entry for the Oscars reflects our commitment to ‘Make in India’ and showcase our talent to the world.
This film has garnered immense love from audiences globally and is among the most-watched films on OTT platforms after a successful theatrical run. Jio Studios is dedicated to making India proud on a global stage, and I thank the Film Federation of India for this honor.”Laapataa Ladies is a charming comedy that revolves around the misadventures of two young brides who become separated on a train, filled with mistaken identities and humorous escapades. Presented by Jio Studios, the film is directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Jyoti Deshpande. It is produced under the banners of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, with a script based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami.
