Karnataka High Court Accepts Ranveer Singh’s Unconditional Apology in ‘Kantara’ Controversy

The Karnataka High Court has accepted an unconditional apology from Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh regarding a controversy over his alleged mimicry of a character from Kantara: Chapter 1. Justice M. Nagaprasanna indicated that the court is likely to dispose of the case following the actor’s submission of a revised, condition-free affidavit.

The legal battle began after an FIR was filed against Singh following his appearance at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The actor was accused of mimicking a character from the Kantara prequel and making objectionable references to the Chamundeshwari temple deity, which complainants argued hurt religious sentiments.

The Road to an Unconditional Apology

The matter moved toward a resolution after the court previously raised concerns that the actor’s initial responses did not reflect genuine remorse. Key developments from the recent hearing include:

Revised Affidavit: Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya informed the court that a fresh, unconditional affidavit has been filed.

Temple Visit: As a mark of respect and to address the sentiments involved, Singh has committed to visiting the concerned temple within the next four weeks.

Court Observations: Justice Nagaprasanna noted that the court had initially declined to stay the FIR because the matter involved deep-seated faith and community sentiments.

Accountability for Public Figures

During the proceedings, the complainant, Prashant Methel, emphasized that celebrities must be mindful of religious sensitivities. The court echoed the seriousness of the issue, stating it would issue a formal order recording the contents of the affidavit while potentially adding a cautionary observation for the future.

Case Closure

Ranveer Singh had approached the High Court to quash the FIR, which was filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for promoting disharmony and hurting religious feelings. With the court now satisfied by the actor’s willingness to coordinate on the language of the apology and his commitment to a physical visit to the shrine, the high-profile legal dispute is expected to be formally closed shortly.
