Karan Johar Takes Legal Action Against Unauthorized Use of His Name in Film Title

Renowned director-producer Karan Johar has taken legal action against the creators of the upcoming Hindi film “Shaadi Ke Director Karan aur Johar.” Reports suggest that Johar has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court, urgently seeking an injunction to prevent the film’s release, which is scheduled for June 14. With the film just a day away from hitting theaters, Johar is not only requesting a temporary stay on its distribution but also a permanent injunction against the unauthorized use of his name in any context related to the movie. In his plea, Karan Johar emphasized the importance of preventing the unauthorized use of his name in the film’s title, arguing that such usage directly violates his personal rights, including his right to privacy and publicity.
He firmly clarified and asserted that he has no involvement whatsoever with the film or its creators. Johar further explained in his complaint that the film’s use of his ‘brand name’ without consent is a clear exploitation that undermines his hard-earned reputation and goodwill in the industry. The urgency of the matter is highlighted by the fact that promotional materials, including trailers and posters, are already circulating on various platforms, including social media.
An official statement reported by India Today quoted the suit, stating, “These trailers and posters have caused and continue to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of Johar. Furthermore, the release of the film with the title containing his brand name ‘Karan Johar,’ in whole or in part, will cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation he has worked hard to establish.”Justice RI Chagla’s bench has agreed to hold a hearing on June 13, Thursday, one day prior to the film’s scheduled release.
