Karan Johar Announces Biopic on R&AW Founder R.N. Kao, Sets August 11, 2028 Release
Filmmaker Karan Johar has officially announced his upcoming film about Rameshwar Nath Kao. Kao was the founder and first chief of Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). The movie will hit theaters nationwide on August 11, 2028. Karan shared the news on social media to mark 58 years of the intelligence agency.
The story is based on Nitin Gokhale’s popular book, Gentleman Spymaster. It will focus on Kao’s life and his secret intelligence missions. The narrative highlights his key role during the 1971 war against Pakistan. Karan praised Kao as a legendary figure who worked quietly in the shadows to protect the country.
Dharma Productions first announced this project in January 2020. They are producing the movie alongside Still and Still Media Collective. After several years of development, the film has finally secured a confirmed release date. However, the cast, director, and other crew details remain secret for now. Rameshwar Nath Kao was a respected Indian intelligence officer. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi appointed him to head R&AW in 1968. He led the organization until 1977 and helped build India’s modern foreign intelligence network. The upcoming film will highlight the formation of R&AW and its historic first major operation.
Interestingly, this is not the only project planned about Kao’s life. Director Hansal Mehta previously announced an OTT series based on R.K. Yadav’s book, Mission R&AW. However, there have been no recent updates regarding that web series.
